3 Idiots

3 Idiots- The sense of humor of Writer/ Director Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi is a must to compliment. They have done such a tremendous job. Direction by Hirani is perfect. All the actors have done such a commendable job. Boman Irani, known as ViruS in the movie, I believe, have overpowered all actors even the likes of Amir Khan. He is such a superb character. In fact, he is such a great discovery by Rajkumar Hirani.

This movie has given a super-blow to the traditional education system that favors WHAT IS THERE IN THE COURSE and

Read from Kantipur

Eco-friendly cycles- Letters to the Editor

Read fromThe Kathmandu Post

Anil Bhattarai’s article on eco-friendly bicycles is not just a good read but also practical (“It’s embarrassingly simple,” Dec.1, Page 6). I, time and again, have been in Cold War with my friends on the feasibility of this go-green-ride in the Kathmandu Valley. They say it is improper and inappropriate in modern Kathmandu. They even blame the topography and the narrow roads without bicycle lanes for why they cannot pedal around.

It has been almost one-and-a-half month since I started cycling. This experience has

Significance of Mass Media Research

Mass media research is that part of communication research, which scientifically studies the process of mass communication and how mass media influence individuals and the society. According to R.D. Wimmer and J.R. Dominick, 'Research is an essential tool in all areas of mass media. Virtually all departments and positions in mass media are involved in research of some kind.' However, the media research is generally concerned to

1. The nature and production of media output; and
2. The way individuals interact with and respond to the content with which they are provided by the media.

Barrie Gunter has differentiated the different style and strategies of media research in terms of two perspectives: "one, message-based studies, which moved from an analysis of the content of messages to their effects on audiences; and two, audience-based studies which focused on the social characteristics environment and, subsequently, needs which audiences derived from, or brought to, the message."

The World War I prompted the need to understand the nature of propaganda. Researchers working from a stimulus-response point of view attempted to uncover the effects of the media on people.

The realization by advertisers in the 1950s and 1960s (that research data are useful in developing ways to persuade potential customers to buy products and services) also contributed to the development of mass media research. Consequently, advertisers encouraged studies of message effectiveness, audience demographics and size, placement of advertising to achieve the highest level exposure (efficiency), frequency of advertising necessary to persuade potential customers, and selection of the medium that offered the best chance of reaching the target audience.

During the early part of the 20th century, there was no interest in the size of an audience or in the types of people who make up the audience. Since then, mass media leaders have come to rely on research results for nearly every major decision they make. The increased demand for information has created a need for more researchers, both public and private.

Research in mass media is used to verify or refute gut feelings or intuition for decision makers. Although common sense is sometimes accurate, media decision makers need additional objective information to evaluate problems, especially when they make decisions that involve large sums of money. The past 50 years have witnessed the evolution of a decision-making approach that combines research and intuition to produce a higher probability of success.

Desire to face the challenge in solving the unsolved problems or concern over practical problems within the media industry also initiates some kind of research. The concern over the impact of mass media naturally persuades to research. For example, the increasing interest of people in the effects of media in the public, especially on children, played role in increasing the research projects related to violence and sexual content in television programs. Researchers have expanded their focus to include the pro-social to anti-social effects.

Research is not limited only to decision-making situations. It is also widely used in theoretical areas to attempt to describe the media, to analyze media effects on consumers, to understand audience behavior, and so on. Every day there are references in the media to audience surveys, public opinion polls, growth projections or status reports of one medium or another, or advertising or public relations campaigns.

Businesses often need information that directly addresses their own particular situation. Therefore, they must ‘research’ or hire someone to do it for them. For example take the competition among the media for audiences and advertising revenue, which continues to reach new levels of complexity. Getting success over the competitors is of prime concern or major problem of media professionals. Proper research is essential in business today in order to maintain or gain a competitive edge. Unless you know what the customer wants, then failure is predictable. The media “survival kit” today includes information about audiences’ changing tastes and values, shifts in demographic patterns, and developing trends in lifestyles.

Statisticians, among other complex activities, generate statistical procedures, or formulas, called algorithms to investigate research questions and hypothesis. The results of this cooperative effort are used to advance our understanding of the mass media.

For example, users of radio and television ratings continually complain about the instability of ratings information. The ratings and shares for radio and television stations in a given market often vary dramatically from one survey period to the next without any logical explanation. Users of ratings periodically ask statisticians and the ratings companies to help determine why this problem occurs and to offer suggestions for making syndicated media audience information more reliable. As recently as the fall of 2001, media statisticians recommended larger samples and more refined methods of selecting respondents to correct the instability. Although the problems have not been solved, it is clear that statisticians and researchers can work together.

In order to set the advertising rates, Radio and TV stations need to know how many people tune in to their programs. Likewise, publishers of newspapers and magazines also need evidence to convince the advertisers. They need information to decide on editorial policies. Here is the research helping you to cope with your practical problems.

The increased demand for information in every field of media business has widened the scope of research. To get trustworthy knowledge there is no alternative than turning to research for answers.

Research is not done only for professional purposes. There are many evidences to prove that desire to get intellectual joy of doing some creative work, desire to be of service to the society as well as desire to get respectability are also the motivating factors to do media research. The evolution of various communication theories is not basically from the contribution of researchers who did their research with a business view, rather those engaged in basic or fundamental research has contributed mostly in this regard.

Water (2005)

“Where do man-widowers live?” whispers a child widow, Chuyia (Sarala), to an adult widow Shakuntala (Seema Biswas) while offering prayer at the bank of a holy river. Other widows yell at Chuyia for speaking such bad of men. At another scene, Shakuntala speaks of an old dead widow as, “She’ll directly go to heaven. If God desires, she will born as a man in her next life.” You are a widow means you are half dead and this movie ‘Water’ is all about this. It’s your misfortune to born as a female.

Water, made in 2005, by Deepa Mehta both as a writer and director, who has notable films to her contributions like 1947 Earth and Fire, stands as a dawn of change to the rustics of Hinduism. It’s a story, of around late 1930s, of a plight of widows living in poverty at a temple in Varanasi. Most of them are forced to live there from their very childhood after the demise of their aged husbands.

Chuyia is a child widow living there by the care of other widows like Kalyani (Lisa Ray) and Shakuntala. These widows are often made involve in sex activities with rich men by an old leader widow, Madhumati (Manorama). Kalyani falls in love with Narayan, played by John Abraham, who is against all kind of taboos and inhuman activities. The rise of Mohandas Gandhi seems to liberate these bad lives. It makes easy for Kalyani and Narayan to tie into marital relationship. But it doesn’t happen so. The relationship built through the help of Chuyia ends after Kalyani discovers Narayan’s father as her sometime partner. Kalyani dies by the river.

Chuyia is sold by that old brutal woman with the help of her right hand, Gulabi (Raghuvir Yadav). Shakuntala makes Chuyia to the hand of Narayan for nurturing.

Water is a great film standing against the still prevailing traditional taboo. At some points, the more desire for promoting the cause has left the characters unfocused and not lively.

Oedipus Rex

(This review is not sequential. But it’ll not be problematic to understand the core of drama.) This is the story of a nation called Thebes of ancient Greece. The current King Oedipus (Saugat Malla) is much wanted, respected and famous among his countrymen. He considers the meaning of his being as to serve his countrymen. He takes pride in his being. So he is most of the times surrounded by his countrymen with complains of sorrows, epidemics, diseases and other difficulties.

The worse enters his life after he vows to unfold and punish the murderer of Laius, the previous king of the state. The future of Oedipus is already foretold as an ill-fated guy, for he’ll kill his father and marry his own mother. The Queen Jocasta (Aruna Karki), to prevent such misfortunes and worse to enter her life, handovers the baby Oedipus to a Gothalo / villager (Vishnuvbhakta Phuyal) for execution. The villager couldn’t dare to kill the baby, so he further handovers it to another villager. The latter gives the baby to a childless King and Queen. Oedipus grows up in that state as a prince, soon to discover the rumor that he is not the actual child of King and Queen. He also hears the rumor that he’ll marry his own mother.

Oedipus lefts the palace so that he wouldn’t have to kill his father and marry his own mother. While travelling all alone, helpless and full-tempered, he meets an old man out for the trip with his bodyguards. He kills them all following their misbehavior with him. The old man happens to be the King Laius from Thebes. Oedipus goes to the country of Thebes and frees all the countrymen from a female-demon. The countrymen find him suitable for the King of their country and crown him to rule the state. He marries widow Jocasta to prove his ill-fate very sadly. Jocasta hangs herself while Oedipus blinds himself.

“Oedipus Rex” is a great tragic Greek Drama written by Sophocles. The drama staged in Rimal Theater, Gurukul (from 2066 Ashad 20- Shrawan 15) in Nepali version is translated and directed by Sunil Pokhrel. All the actors have performed very well, still Saugat Malla (Oedipus) and Sarita Giri (maid) have proved themselves much stronger and experienced. Thumbs Up for Saugat Malla!!

Sunil Pokhrel has been very clever this time. He has concluded some of the scenes in narration that are really hard and time consuming to present in stage. There are lots of uses of symbols and colors in artistic manner that add extra to the drama. Greek story plus Nepali dances really suit the drama.

Ardh Satya (1982)

Classic movies, art movies, experimental movies or whatever............ these movies somehow reflect humans, or they are somewhere around us, representing us. So, I love them. I don't need to wonder after I watched them. Partial reality plus fiction, which I cannot bear. Just letting them be of a genre would obviously mean something somehow, I believe. I love animated movies. I do enjoy watching super-character movies, but, mixed spices spoil my taste.

And, Ardh Satya (अर्ध सत्य), made in 1982, respected my feeling. Starring the legendary performer Om Puri, Smita Patil and several others (like Amrish Puri and Naseeruddin Shah in short and significant roles), the story (theme) is nothing extra and unusual. But the way the things are shown is different- not mainstream type. "I am not your wife"- Anant Velankar (Om Puri) shouts at his old father, played by Amrish Puri, who tries to force him to accept to marry the girl of his acquaintance. Anant has been forced by his father to become a cop leaving all his studies and dreams behind. He always saw his father beating his mother without reasons. He no more feels like acting in his arrogant orders, which he has respected till today.

Ardh Satya is the story of a sub-inspector, Anant Velankar, who wants to do his duty being just and honest. But the corrupt police-politics-bureaucrat nexus always forbids him from doing his duty properly. He feels like a no-man at all. Rama Shetty (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) is a local powerful gangster, who has his influence up to the CM. He is never charged for his guilts because of his power and influence. Velankar not able to sue him in the lockup starts getting drunkard during and after his duties. He fights hard for the profession and other receives the medal for it. He has a close chemistry with a college girl Jyotsna Gokhale (Smita Patil) with whom he shares all his feelings and frustrations. He, in his frustrations, derogates himself killing a suspect.

Velankar is suspended from his duty now. The issue is about to move the whole nation and civil societies. Velankar doesn't want this to happen against him. A police officer suggests him to take helps of Rama Shetty to solve the crisis. He makes it to Shetty but is offered to be his man in counter. He kills Shetty to defense his pride and dignity. He surrenders to the police.

The story of just and disobliging policemen and their behavior has been presented very well. Everything go as they had to go. Everyone performs matched with their bests and likes. The movie ends in the best way it had to.

) ...........................................(I took this photo after my SLC, 2061 B.S.).....................................................

Dev D (2009)

I don’t want to be high on this issue nor am I marketing or promoting anybody or anything. I watched Dev D in the very beginning of this semester or it would be appropriate to say after I moved to hostel. “Such a good direction yaar. You should watch it.” Shail Shrestha (Suste) proposed me to watch this movie.

I purchased a DVD of Dev D for Rs.30 from my ex-favorite Mahaboudhha (because these days I am into downloading through torrent and other possible programs). I couldn’t watch it though it was going best. I couldn’t tolerate the hall-print quality and sound of the movie. I watched some 30 or more minutes and quitted for the time. I borrowed the movie from one of my friends. Sorry! I don’t know who he was. It was of the same quality. …… “Oh shit….. it’s the same again” …… may be that was my expression at that moment. But torrent offers good quality movies. Finally, Nashiv (Kafle) gave me a downloaded version. It was not of the best quality but was much better.

I completed the movie in installments. It is a Hindi movie. But I didn’t feel like I am eating conventional (mainstream) Paanipuri at any points. It was a complete new taste. A complete good taste. A complete experimental. Dev D, of course, collected some hypes but not up to what it actually deserved and deserves. Of my friends, most of them, who watched it they purely loved it. I found nothing to criticize. The story, dialogues, music, colors, direction, acting, photography everything is perfect and extraordinary.

Dev D, the modern Devdas, is the theme. The theme is like that of older versions but not the storyline. Not the taste. Dev and Paru, as in older versions, who are living in different regions, do not share letters full of decorative words. They share naked photos instead. They share emotions. They even try to get physically connected after they meet, either in dark corners or bushes, but somehow luck does not favor them. Dev (Abhay Deol) and Paro (Mahi Gill) are parted not because of their varying family status but common misunderstandings. Dev couldn’t afford to hear his sweetheart, Paru, shares her bed with some other person in his absence though it’s not true. His arrogant attitude separates them. Another fellow weds Paru.

Chanda (Kalki Koechlin), modern Chandramukhi, is an after-made teen prostitute. A fellow, her partner, markets the video of him and Chanda having sex when she was in her schools. But only Chanda is seen in the video. She is cheated and ruined through that mobile video. “How could you watch that”- Chanda screams to her daddy who has just seen the video. He hits a bullet in his brain. These incidents and several others pave the way for Chanda to earn her livelihood by being a young prostitute.

Frustrated and partly ruined drunkard Dev reaches Chanda’s khothi. Spending some moments together they fell in love with each other. May be modern lovers rarely worry lifelong for their gone love. At some point Dev and Chanda, too, seem like separating but an accident unites them thus making the ending the best possible of all alternatives.

I am writing these things from my point of view. The views on arts and literatures, I think, can’t be generalized. The year 2008 ended with such a worst Gajini but the dawn of 2009 had to give the best like Dev D. I didn’t find Dilip Kumar (the first Devdas), Shahrukh Khan (the second) much weighty over Abhay Deol (the modern). Of all the threes, this last one is my personal favorite. In fact this is one of my favorite Hindi movies. Abhay Deol is a promising actor with great possibilities of giving more in coming days.

Rio Bravo (1959)

Perhaps this is the first time I am watching John Wayne. The look of Sanjay Dutt and the smile that makes me think of Sunil Dutt- he had these. I never knew. But I know this now. But does he look same in his other movies too? Let’s see sometime afterwards. But I loved him anyways. The hunt for more cowboy type movies got me to know another man, John Waney. I think I learned there are cowboy movies when I was going through Narayan Wagle’s ‘Palpasa Café’. I had obviously heard of the word ‘cowboy’. Oh I remember… I had many times encountered these types of characters in the ad of Marlboro Cigarette. Let’s not go the history of my acquaintance with cowboys. Let’s talk about the movie.

I just watched the movie “Rio Bravo” starring John Wayne. The Sheriff of the town Rio Bravo, John T. Chance (played by John Wayne) has to arrest Joe Burdette (Claude Akins), the brother of a powerful rancher Nathan Burdette (John Russell), because he witnesses himself gunning down a fellow in the saloon. He is kept in the jail where he is guarded by an old crippled talkative fellow, Stumpy (Walter Brennan).

Troubles by Nathan Burdette start coming forth in trying to help his brother escape out of custody. A wagoner, Pat Wheeler (Ward Bond), offers to help his problems. But the Sheriff didn’t feel like hiring his men to help him. But the young fellow Colorado Ryan (Ricky Nelson), a gunfighter, impresses him with his confidents.

The deputy, Dude (Dean Martin), appointed by the Sheriff is all ruined after he hooked up a girl who betrayed him later. He has become a town drunker. He is again given another chance by the Sheriff after he promises to recover from alcoholism. Once he tactfully guns down a man of Burdette, the murderer of Pat Wheeler. But, he cannot serve well he thinks because he has hand shaking problem. His shooting ability has diminished so.

On the other hand, the Sheriff also seems like getting romantically involved with a gambler girl Feathers (Angie Dickinson) …but slowly… very slowly. They start hooking to each-other in their own styles. The girl tries to show to the sheriff that she cares him but it’s us who has to understand self that the sheriff also cares her by time and again warning her of bad things. He is a sheriff and cannot directly confess that he to loves her. That’s not his style….. hehe….

Colorado once helps the Sheriff gun down three paid men of Burdette. So the guard of dead wagoner Pat Wheeler is also moved in to the job. Now four men (Chances, Dude, Colorado Ryan and the old Stumpy) are waiting for the US marshal to arrive the town. They are planning to handover Joe to the US marshal. But Dude is kidnapped in the midway. Now the two captured are to be swapped with no harm. But the Sheriff gang very tactfully captures all men of N. Burdette including him.

The most interesting thing I found in the movie is its simple plotting and the subject. The characters Dude (Dean Martin) and Stumpy (Walter Brennan) are worthiest watching. They have given best performance. I rate the movie 3.5/5

High Plains Drifter

High Plains Drifter (1973)
A stranger (Clint Eastwood) enters a small town “Lago” to stay for the night. He is a mysterious gunfighter. He scares town people with nothing. He guns down three gunmen, who unsuccessfully tried to shoot him down. The town people hire him to defend the town from three murderous outlaws, Stacey Bridges, Bill Borders and Cole Carlin who have just been released from the jail after they brutally whipped to death the town’s local lawman Marshal Jim Duncan. These three outlaws return to the town soon to find themselves dead by whipping, hanging and shooting.

This movie starring and directed by Clint Eastwood is quite cryptic. Although seems like everything working fine with no obstacles, some words expressed by the characters are quite relational with past conspiracies that are very hard to conjure up by just viewing the movie. When the stranger leaves the town with minima hints of who he is to Marshal Jim Duncan, the movie gets over. This movie is worth watching. It’ll boogie around your brain for hours. Best of Luck guys! Do watch it for least movies end with such mysteries. I rate it 4/5.

Horton Hears a Who (2008)

Strange things begin to happen in the city of Whoville. People are amazed by the snow falling in the month of summer too. Actually the snow is due to the morning dew in the jungle of Nool where the elephant, Horton (voice Jim Carey), is still asleep leaving the clover (that is holding a speck of dust) nearly to freeze. He breathes out hot air above the clover to make the city snow-free.

I’m starting the story in a quite suspense way and I’m feeling nice to do in that way. Horton is an inventive and imaginative elephant who teaches his young friends about the amazing world around them. So kid and young animals like to gather around and listen to him. A speck of dust passes by Horton’s ear while swimming. He feels like some sound coming out of it. He chases it and finally catches it by a clover. He discovers lives inside that tiny speck. He finds there the city of Whoville, home to the Whos, by the Mayor (voice Steve Carell) of that tiny world who keeps on talking with him. The Mayor is a father of 96 daughters and a smart son named Jojo. Horton agrees to help protect the home of Whos by leaving the speck in safer place. He has to come across an evil kangaroo and an eagle to save that speck. He goes through millions and millions of clovers to get back the clover holding that speck of dust.

Horton’s neighbors ridicule him for the possibilities of a world inside a speck of dust just like Whos city men to the Mayor who are not ready to believe an elephant holding their world by a clover. Horton’s neighbors don’t want their children’s minds be poisoned by his crazy ideas. A female kangaroo (voice Carol Burnett) who acts by herself as the head of Nool makes a mob against Horton and his belief.

The similar things occur in Whoville where the city Chairman tries to get supports from mob against the Mayor. The people do not believe the Mayor until he makes them hear the voice of the elephant, Horton. Similarly, the animals of Nool do not believe Horton until he makes them hear the voices of help coming from the tiny speck of dust. Finally Horton and the Mayor are proved best in their own worlds.

This is an animated 3D cartoon movie. This is my only second time watching such movie. I simply loved it. But I think I’ll get addicted to them in coming days. Let my exams get over first. Coming back to the movie, I would like to count it on a comic and humanistic genre. Respect for all lives micro and macro are the kind of values one ought to learn from it, just like the main character, Horton, stands by the motto that, "After all, a person is a person, no matter how small.” I rate it 4.5/5.

12 Angry Men

12 Angry Men (1957)
I began to watch “12 Angry Men” thinking it as a something like a gangster or an action movie. Yes, it’s a full action movie but not the physical one. Although some moments and consequences try to lead to physical actions, it’s based on wordy-war. The movie is based on about 1 and ½ hour talk and discussion that occurs around a round-table after a jury comprising 12 members is given a task to decide whether that 18 year old slum-fellow is guilty/not guilty of killing his father. It's up to these jurors to decide the future of that young fellow. The boy is hanged if the jury’s verdict tells him guilty.

All 11 jurors except one first votes him guilty simply based on the superficial evidences provided to the court by that boy’s neighbors and the detectives. The alone man, played by Henry Fonda, thinks it’s possible that the boy may not be guilty since there are no strong evidences that fully justify the case. Some jurors support his reasons while some make jokes of them. His reasons seem so accurate and true that they pursue and praise some other jurors to think the boy as not guilty. The reasoning process continues till all the juries accept the boy as not guilty.

The strong reasons and words made and uttered to prove the boy not guilty are a very weak reasons to think of as the reasons that make the movie so classic and beautiful. The Nepali or an Indian filmmaker would have flawed the whole movie although they would have been provided with the same materials- like concept, script and screenplay. I mean to say the things that should be judged as the chief reasons behind the classicism and artistic nature of the movie are the finest portrayal of the characters, which justify most of human characters and behaviors. The main subject of the movie is one aspect to judge while it’s deeper meaning and portrayals are the chief materials to conjure up as a perfect audience.

There are smart characters, over-smart characters, intelligent characters, supportive characters, stupid characters and aggressive characters. There are lots of funs, humors and actions. You’ll get to see everything around one round table and a room- how people reasons and try to defend themselves and their prejudices; how some are unmoved by filthy reasons and nature of the people around.

Our contemporary cinemas and in fact all of us are now totally commercialized. Very few stand there to preserve the real meaning of art and classicism. These kinds of movies are rarely made. It’s worthiest watching. My life was complete before watching this movie. After watching it, I felt that it would have been incomplete if I wouldn’t have watched it. If science would have permitted me to rate it 6 out of 5!! THUMBS UP to all the characters and crew members of the movie!!!

Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset

Before Sunrise (1995)

Before Sunrise (1995) is a movie that depicts a chemistry of a boy and a girl who meet at a train and spend night at an unknown city of Vienna. Celine (Julie Delpy), a young French girl, returning to Paris in a train after seeing her grandmother, feels so much irritated and disturbed by an elderly couple arguing with each other. In fact all the passengers of that large cabin are being disturbed. She couldn’t concentrate to the book she is reading and choose to sit few sits back. Luckily she gets to sit by the side of Jesse (Ethan Hawke), an American fellow, heading for Vienna for his next morning’s flight to Madrid, nearly of her age with both of them a book in their hand, but intense willingness to talk to each other. These boy and girl center those fighting couple as the subject to ignite their conversation. They leave the cabin for lounge car and starts talking. They talk about their journey and destination. They joke and talk about life and philosophy.

The train reaches the Vienna and the boy vaguely proposes the girl if she would join him till the sunrise at the new city of Vienna. The girl agrees to join him. They travel round the city, restaurants, and pubs. They joke. They talk about their families. Friends. Interests. Life. Philosophies. Sex. A lot of things. They feel a kind of attraction to each other. They kiss. Express their warmth for each other but do not express love in words.

It’s morning. They have to depart now. They may not see each other again. They do not want to share addresses, mails, contact numbers… The relationship would fade away within first few mails and contacts. They wish each other a happy life. Their last intense hugs and kisses force them to vow to meet each other in coming days also. They boy proposes to meet at every 5 years. But it would be so weird sociological experiment. The years are decreased to one. Finally, they vow to meet after six months counting from the previous day- the day they had met. The movie ends. And it’s up to you to guess what would happen later in their life.

The best part is everything seems so simple and real. You don’t feel you are watching an acted movie. You don’t feel the actors like acting. There’s nothing suspense and threatening. It’s like something you may experience one day. The two actors fill-up everything. Love. Humor. Sentiments. Joy. Sorrow. Pain. Everything. The movie is so real. I rate it 5/5.

Before Sunset (2004)
In 2004, after 9 years, the same crew member of the movie Before Sunrise (1995) is again back with its second part- Before Sunset Jesse is now a bestselling author in US. Celine, who is currently involved in an organization working for environment conservation, read in a newspaper that Jesse was coming to Paris to talk about his book with its readers. Fortunately the book is about the night spent nine years back with a French girl in the city of Vienna. Celine appears at the meeting to see Jesse.

They take a short walk in Paris. Jesse has to catch his flight at the end of the day to another city. They are so sorry and sad that they didn’t share any contact addresses. They discuss why they couldn’t meet six months later as they had planned to. They talk about their successful/ unsuccessful life/ married life/ unmarried life. They talk about their previous joyful moment. They argue whether they had sex at that time or not. Jesse gives Celine a lift to her apartment in his vehicle. The movie ends with no sign of whether Jesse is able to catch his flight or whether he leaves Celine’s apartment or not. Instead the perfect ending! It’s up to the viewers to make sense further. I rate it 4/5.

These both movies have a lot of long one-take-shot scenes. Seems like they had a lot of rehearsals before the shooting, which is best-to-see in these movies. This movie obviously seems to inspire the youths who would like to make low-budget movies. You will not suspect the acting of these two characters even for a second. They are perfect. I hope you’ll not miss these movies. It’ll make difference to your judgments about the movies. Watch them!

The Shining

The Shining (1980)
The season at Overlook Hotel runs from May 15th to October 30th. It’s very costly to operate Overlook Hotel during snowy-winter. There is probability of skiing at that place having such seclusion and scenic beauty but the road covered with high-feet snow makes it unfeasible to make up to the hotel. It’s enormous costly to clear the road. So the hotel is closed during winter after appointing one family/person to look after it until the following May. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a writer and a former school teacher, takes responsibilities this time to look after the hotel.

He, with his wife and a son, travels to the hotel that has really a worst past record. One of the winter caretakers (named Charles Grady) ran amuck and killed all his family members and himself during the winter of 1970, due to mental breakdown caused by long solitude and isolation (the result of a kind of claustrophobic reaction), chopping with an ax and putting both barrels of his shotgun in his mouth. Some most of the people are really put off by the idea of working as a winter caretaker at such hotel. But Jack has assured the Hotel staff that this is not going to happen with him.

His son Danny (Danny Lloyd) has mental disorder if he doesn’t like some situations. He has created and preserved another fellow named Tony inside his mouth, who suggests and talks with him. Danny has a kind of shining ability. He can foresee future sometimes and can recall past sometimes. He recalls the bloodshed of 1970 and is quite disturbed mentally.

Mental breakdown starts to occur with Jack. He doesn’t like anybody disturbing him while he is writing/ typing stuffs. He too has the shining ability. He talks with the barman, demised caretaker Charles Grady at his own. Charles Grady even suggests him to correct his family members if they are not functioning as per his wills.

Wendy, once, checks the typed papers of Jack soon to find the only sentence “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” typed all over in that great pile of papers. Jack starts growing violent so his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) locks him in the storeroom. He comes out of the room with the help of an ax and starts searching for his wife and son around the hotel premise. This family does not contact the hotel staff or answers the radio call during the long interval of time. So, Hallorann (Scatman Crothers), the chief serf, arrives at the hotel soon to have his chest chopped with the ax by amuck Jack. Wendy and Danny get out of the hotel by a Snowcat while Jack dies freezing in the snow.

Jack Torrance is a thrilling character all over the movie. He smiles and thrills you. He laughs and thrills you. He gets angry and thrills you. Jack Nicholson is worthiest watching in almost all the movies. This was the third time I watched him. I don’t remember him much in the movie Easy Rider. But the second movie I watched of him, “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest”, was simply great. I am a great fan of him since the very movie. He has done such a great work in the “The Shining”. He is such a worthiest bastard, ass**** and a Son of a B**** to watch over in this movie. Don’t miss it! I rate it 4/5. It loses one point for lacking strong reasons to the ways Jack Torrance’s character grows violent.

Departures

Departures - The Gift of last memories (2008)
The movie “Departures- the gift of last memories” won Academy Award (2008) for Best Foreign Language Film recently. Slum-dog Millionaire, the Academy Award winner for Best Movie, collected lots of hypes and goodwill but, this movie, Departure, is left only to the lists of behind-the-hype movie lovers. Doyle has been a hero in the cinema world but Yojiro Takita, the director of the movie “Departures”, is still an unsung hero for most of the audiences.

I was not that satisfied with the movies nominated for this year’s Academy Award in the Best Movie category. I surfed the internet so that I could find information of some good movies to watch. I found about “Departures” as the winner of Academy Award (2008) for Best Foreign Language Film and bought a DVD of it, for NRS.30, from a shop at Mahabouddha.

It is one of the simplest movies to be added to my list that lists movies like The Bicycle Thief (Vittorio De Sica, 1948), Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and few others. The best part of the movie is its very simplicity. It seems simple in its presentation. The lessons to be learned are the ways it has minimized the use of big technologies to make it simple and low budgeted with strong understanding of the meaning of a movie.

Some movies are to spend few hours and regulating joy, laughter or fear. They are over after you watch them. You forget about them. But some movies inspire you to assimilate them for your good being. “Departures” is not over after 2 hours and 10 minutes. It begins inside you after this factor of time. You begin to learn the value of all works available on this earth. You will begin to respect the life, death and relations.

Daigo Kobayashi has to move to the countryside, to the home left to him by his mother, because he can no more support his life at Tokyo. The Orchestra where he used to work as a cellist has just dissolved because of its commercial failure. His wife pretends happily to follow him where he goes. At his home at countryside he goes through an advertisement entitled ‘Departures’ that read the need of an employee with opportunities of lots of journeys. He thinks the organization as a Travel Agency and applies for the job. With zero effort and difficulties he got the job soon to discover it is actually for a “Nokanshi” or “encoffineer”.

With hesitations and difficulties at first, he begins to enjoy his job though people, including his wife, despise it. He takes pride in his job and acts as a gentle gatekeeper for departure to another stage of life. He uncovers the respect for all jobs done with pride and joy. He discovers the meaning of life and profoundly tries to eliminate people’s misconception of a dead body merely as a corpse. This movie deserves 5/5 for the selection of the story and its simplicity of everything.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and The Sundance Kid (Robert Redford), the shotgun and pistol shooters, are the leaders of their bandit gang. Butch Cassidy acts like a front-man while making plans and to loot while the latter one is a great shooter. They cover up each other while shooting and looting. They backup each other. They know nothing besides looting. It’s hard for them to support their life with other jobs. They earn their livelihood by looting banks and trains. However, they are not happy and their life is not safe. They are always sought after for their crime by several government and city shooters and other forces.

While running from these forces and try to escape the wanted areas Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are left to a two member bandit gang now. So, they travel to different places and countries and continue the same job. Etta Place (Katharine Ross), Sundance Kid’s sweetheart, joins their gang for sometime. She sees no signs of these two men getting into other jobs like farming or animal rearing, so the situation forces her to leave them.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are trapped by a large number of forces while lunching. These two men backup and cover up each other to shoot to death lots of these government shooters. Other dozens and dozens of shooters come to help reminders and trap these two skilled bandits to death.

The ending of the movie is perfect. The two men do nothing magical to save them. They fight up to their courage and skill to defend their life. These two injured men know they are trapped outside by additional shooters but they still seem busy to make plans to what to do next after they get out of the place shooting to death all the forces. They come out with guns in each hands to die with 100s of bullets. The movie is over with the best the best thing that could end it. I rate it 3.5/5.

A Bronx Tale

A Bronx Tale (1993)
People respect Sonny (Chazz Palminteri) because he is considered a god in his neighborhood. People respect Sonny because they fear them. Calogero (Lillo Brancato) is confused what to consider him as – a god or a villain. Calogero wants to get caught in the eyes of Sonny but he does not care him until one day. Sonny, to save his neighbor, kills a fellow and Calogero is the eye witness of the incident. But he saves Sonny from going to jail by mentioning neither of the people captured as suspects are the killers.

From that day they are friends though Sonny is father-aged to Calogero. Lorenzo (Robert De Niro), Calogero’s father, doesn’t like him hanging up with Sonny. He mentions to Calogero that people fear Sonny, they do not love him. But Calogero meets Sonny frequently and get involves around money activities, like gambling, horse race etc. he gets tips for helping Sonny being in his side.

Calogero has a very bad circle of friends. They are always concerned of getting involved in fighting and torturing their neighbor (whom they call as niggers). Once, Sonny saves Calogero from a car explosion that kills all his friends. He runs to wish Sonny thanks soon to see him shot dead, before he’d wish him, by that fellow’s son whom he had killed in his neighborhood.

Directed by Robert De Niro (already a famous actor), the character Lorenzo, this movie is a tale of Bronx as the name itself suggests. This movie has escaped from commercial touches. I rate it 4/5.

Dumb & Dumber

Dumb & Dumber (1994)
Lloyd (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) are two dummies in the movie Dumb and Dumber. They are two real pieces of shit or it would be appropriate to call them assholes. They have given up their best for 2 hours full comic and laughter.
Jim Carrey is always best in such foolish and stupid roles. One broken fore-tooth of Carrey and his child hair cut has best suited his character. Both Carrey and Daniels have done their best job. They look so ridiculous, foolish and stupid in their behavior. They are grown up beings but act like children. They have street behavior- always fighting, arguing and messing up things.

Lloyd messes up everything after he takes the suitcase left in the airport by Mary (Lauren Holly). She had left it the pathway for two other persons to pick it up. Lloyd couldn’t make it to Mary in the Airport so he plans of going up to Aspin to deliver the suitcase so he can impress Mary.

Lloyd and Harry are jobless at the moment because of their careless driving and other silly activities. The persons at the airport follow them for suitcase wherever they go. They finally make it to Aspin after travelling miles of wrong way. The suitcase breaks out while they are fighting with dollars splitting all over the icy ground. They stay at the hotel for VIPs. They spend money haphazardly. They use money even to wipe their nose and tears. Finally, they meet Mary. It is unclear how much money they handover to her.

This movie is full comic. You’ll laugh with tears. I rate it 4/5 for its powerful comic feature. Jim Carrey always ROCKS!!

Love in the time of cholera

Love in the time of cholera (2007)
The two loving souls, Fermina Daza (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) and Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem- the Oscar winner for ‘No Country for Old Man’), are departed by Fermina’s father because Florentino- the telegram boy, also a cholera victim, is not rich enough for his daughter. With the time the girl starts believing that relation merely as an illusion where the boy waits for his princess for the life. His mother wants him to make love with other women so that he would forget Fermina, his princess. Fermina marries with a doctor, who fells in love with her at the very first sight. Florentino does not marry but he sleeps with more than 600 females of all age until he reunites with Fermina at the age of 72, after her husband dies.

Javier Bardem has acted up to the satisfaction. Giovanna Mezzogiorno has done justice to the movie. Love in the time of cholera (2007) is a worth to see movie. Also you’ll not miss anything if you don’t watch it. The movie is average. I rate it 3/5.

To Let You Know

To Let You Know- A song recorded by my friend Saujan Man Pradhan in his mobile. He send me the song while we were chatting. I loved the song and in jest I told him that I would made a simple video for it. He agreed... Oh My God, he agreed. Now, I had to make video for it. Anyways no worries.... I thought it would be a good practice for me.

Amisha Lama- A shy girl from Media Studies (batch 2008) was chatting with me or let's say I was chatting with her (hehehe). And.....while just kidding I told her that I wanted to take some of her pictures for a video. She agreed... Oh My God, she agreed. I had given words to a girl..... now, I've to do it. We planned for the very next day to shoot in TaluDanda. I clearly remember it was Saturday. I proposed Shekhar KC if he wanted to model for the video. He is our boy. How could he say No?

Now, our shooting unit had four members- Shekhar and Amisha (actors) and Prem Tshering Sherpa and me (for photography, videography and direction). We had done ZERO homework for the video. I even hadn't given proper care to the words of the song. We didn't know the theme of the song. I just loved the song and its simple and fine music. Even though, we were heading for a video-shoot with our heads held high- BINDASS!!

We reached TaluDanda. The time of struggle began as we had not planned what to shoot, how to shoot and with what theme to shoot. We just clicked photos and took videos randomly. We- everyone did a lot of NATAK. We took shots of Shekhar playing guitar in the hostel after returning from TaluDanda. The song was in Plugging and Shekhar was playing rhythm. I noticed it after I sat for video editing few weeks later. Anyway, Saujan was waiting with great passion for his video to be released (hehe) so I edited about 95% of video and left rest for another day. It was our bad luck. Prem formatted his computer and the editing version saved in C Drive just flew like burnt cigarette. He was formatting his computer and I was in front of him showing my teeth. The Format completed and my antennae became conscious. It was too late. Saujan replied- “Fine! No problem! I can wait till you complete your Undergraduate.” He was sad.

Again after few weeks, I took some shots of Shekhar playing Plugging in the guitar. Then I stored the video for about one and a half month. Today Shekhar came with an idea to edit the video and I permitted him do whatever he wanted. I just directed him to cut some clips and to increase time-length of some. Now the video has been released to the whole world. Please, watch it for free…... hehehe.

I know the video is just OK. Everything got messed-up. Still it was our work left handicapped in some folder in F Drive … untouched for months. It taught us that a proper homework is important, in fact compulsory, before beginning anything. And it’s proving successful now.

The Book Fair and Bhrikuti

(It's only for educational purpose)
As a part of our educational visit, we second year students of Media Studies visited 13th Nepal Education and Book Fair 2009 which was held at Bhrikuti Mandap, Pradarshani Marg from May 15-23. As the name of the event suggests, it is both the Education and Book fair. As I read very few books, I didn’t know that the book fair was going on. It was our project coordinator Nirmala Mani Adhikary who suggested us to visit the event and collect some information about it. We all students from our class had to compulsorily make it to the even but still some of my friends damned it.

One section of the fair contained course of studies of most of the levels, educational materials including posters, globes and various equipments while other contained the books- literature, biography, fiction and various genres. We could see people, ranging from children to old, attending this fair as educational trip, family visit and pals hangout. Some teenagers, including stall keepers, were even dating at this spot. The temples and the nearby forests had gone less to these people. (May be they wanted to prove themselves in public- I’m really sorry for mocking other’s feeling.)

Some were buying loads and loads of books and some were collecting just the advertisements and free books. I didn’t wish to but I compelled myself to buy two books- Akalpaniya for my friend and Ek Asafal Aakhyaan ko Prarambha for myself. One 8th Grade fellow surprised us by saying that he completes a Novel in just a couple of days. I didn’t pay much attention to education stalls that were luring our stupid teenagers and youths for abroad education.

The most interesting of the event was that in one book-stall I got to see a book “Our Childhood” published by one of my classmate, Bhrikuti Rai, while she was in Grade 10. I remembered that she had told about the book while we were in first semester but I had already forgotten it. Only after encountering it I realized her words. She used to collect childhood biographies of some national personalities and translate them into English. So, it was her mother’s idea to compile those collections and publish as a book. It was a matter of glory for me as a friend and jealousy as a classmate. Three cheers for Bhrikuti!

There are always jokes and mocks while we are with friends. We cracked jokes of some stalls, visitors and even our friends. The most disgusting was the toilet, which remained me of my Nation.

Let's take a short look..............

(We made this video for our educational purpose/project, so one may not find it interesting.) I felt like being forced to eat the whole packet of ghee because I always asked time and again for a spoonful. I believe everyone in my class felt like this while doing the photo and video stories. But I am really thankful to our project coordinator Sten Brand for greatly supporting and appreciating our work. Also, I am most thankful to my new friend Amita Thapa Magar for inviting us (me and Shail) to click photos in that great event.

It is another 11th hour product. I sat for 3 nights till 1 am editing and cutting down 1 hr video to 3 minutes. I hate narrating but it was my turn as Gaurav did last time and Shail was narrating other "Feature Video" (....... and this one was a news-video). I didn't want to miss some of the great moments of the event so I've tried squeezing everything by cutting into pieces, overlapping etc. I clicked a lot of photos but I couldn't add them to the video because the video already exceeded 2 minutes time limit. We have tried to make a traditional type news-story video (hehehe).

Ma Aaudaichhu Priye-

About the making:
I'm physically present in the classes, but I'm usually lost mentally (so I suffer a lot during the exams). Sometimes funny and interesting ideas go through my mind at these moments. So the concept of making an Ad of _________ (you'll have to watch the video to know this...) went through my mind. I first shared this concept with Ratan and he was very happy to work for this though I have never heard him of saying NO!! (e.g. Me/anyone: "रतन, ठिमी मा छ्याङ् खान जाउँ है आज क्लास लाई बाल दिएर ।" This is Ratan.

Then I shared this idea with one of friends Shail Shrestha(....he is always showing his stupid teeth). This concept-man also loved my concept. One friend (not from our class) even mocked this concept. After few days, we started making video for the Ad with Chahana Sigdel and Shail in the roles but without proper plannings. I don't know about Shail (for he is mainly interested in creating concepts and direction) but Chahana was very much willing to do the video. When me and Ratan approached her with proposal, she was so happy. She went among her friends screaming "I'm in!"

We started with photo shoot (from KU to Talu Danda). Chahana really gave nice poses (I don't mean Shail didn't gave good poses, he is also equally nice in this matter.). Our inexperience and lack of understanding between friends came in the way to obstruct everything and it was over after few days. It was pack-up for about 2 semesters. Although the theme is same, the story line and scene sequences are all new. I wish you'll not dislike the video.

About the Video:
A very short, both romantic and funny video(1 min. 25 secs.), made by KU students (2009) with Parbat Thapa (Electrical Engineering 4th/last year) in the scene....Poem narration by Ratan Aanad Karna, background score by Diwas Manandhar and Parbat Thapa, editing by Shekhar KC and me, camera by Prem Tshering Sherpa and, scene selection, photography direction, script, concept and direction by me.(hahahaha.. I am crediting myself for so many works... but it doesn't matter...). It was a good homework before making the video, so we completed shooting within 1-2 hours.

Walk in Kathmandu

After attending one of Koshish Abhiyan Programs at Martin Chautari, I took a bus to Kantipur Publication wherefrom I collected money of my two published articles (at Post Platform). (Please don't think that I am advertising myself. I just want to maintain flow in the story) Again it was time to take a vehicle to Sukedhara. Instantly I came with an idea to make a walk though it is not healthy to make in the city of Kathmandu. I am very much vulnerable to water-borne and air-borne diseases. But I decided to fight this idea.

I covered my face (it would be proper to say nose and mouth) with scarf though it does not filter the air, turned the cap back and took out the camera from my (medium trekking like) bag. I usually carry this bag so that I shouldn’t have to carry those non-degradable plastic bags. It’s always nice, useful and worthy to start from home than talking nonsense (like our politicians). Covering my face would benefit me in other ways also. It would lessen away my hesitation midst of my stupid countrymen. I thought the photos could be useful later also. And it proved much worthy recently.

Our department guest teacher/ lecturer Sten Brand, a Norwegian young man, who is helping us with some multimedia tools, gave us group assignments of making photo-narration video. Me and my Popas(Project Partners) Gaurav Devkota and Shail Shrestha had a kind of compulsion to give a topic to the teacher without making plan. I had those photos stored in a DVD and planned to use them in this small 1-2 minutes project. We got about two weeks time for a two minute video. At this length of time Clint Eastwood would have completed half of the shooting of his movie. (I am not sure but I think I had read somewhere that he had made his Oscar Winner movie “Million Doller Baby” within just 35 days.)

For about 11 days we remained completely out of touch with the project. It was another rush hour after that. I stay at hostel and my Popas daily travel from Kathmandu. We selected photos and Popas took the responsibility of making music + narration Audio for it. Gaurav gave a sweet narration but with bit rush to maintain flow with the music (Kathamandu by Bob Segel). Due to load-shedding problem, it was difficult for them to make the video. So they made a sample video and handed everything over to me for the final editing and output.

Yesterday I stayed till 1 am and completed the video using my dear Movie Maker. We were not permitted to use other editing software. I always use/used ULead for video editing purposes and I am/was not used to with it. Yesterday it was so dearest to me. It was making my computer hang time and again still I was using it with care and love and request.

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 1pm. Shekhar the front-man boy of our class, both in work and study, first agreed to show his group’s video. (watch his video). It was the best video amongst all- and it was the beginning. So we decided to show our at last (ha ha ha ha ha ha). But it was not that bad at all after- all…. though it was an eleventh hour product. Lets cheer Popas!!!

Explore photography

What I learn after having own a DSLR for a year already- you are simply not a good photographer by just holding it. Couple months later I had own it, I was in the mood to replace it with another new and expensive for I felt like already done every bests of it and still unsatisfied with the quality it was giving. I also felt like trying most of the stuffs Rajbhai Suwal had preached in a small seminar. But I hadn't tried actually.

I spent previous couple of months watching really good movies ranging from Ghajini- the worst starring my Indian favorite Amir Khan to Oscar- winner Slum-dog Millionaire. I also watched best cinematography and photography packed Bandit Queen (I think 1995, Hindi) to 1975 Oscar winner One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest. Slum-dog Millionaire and Bandit Queen were impressively great from photography point of view. I thought of trying them in still photography and felt like done it. Yes I have done it. I have started doing photography from that perspective. I am no more wishing to go Pokhara for beautiful pictures. "Keen Insight"- my father had told about creative writing and it does applies for photography and almost all stuffs where real ART can be practiced.

So friends do not run from those holding DSLRs. Feel great to click with your 1 megapixel cellphone camera. Do not judge a photo by resolution and megapixel- it's what DSLR can only give. Rest is yours. First explore photography. I have already started doing it. All the best!!
